On the 28th February 1905 at the then Victoria Hotel, Lee-on-the-Solent a meeting of 33 gentlemen and seven ladies under the chairmanship of Captain J. Ramsay formed the Lee-on-the-Solent Golf Club. Sir John Charles Robinson who had developed Lee-on-the-Solent was elected President and J. Ramsay, Captain. A committee was also elected. The meeting passed a resolution as follows "That the committee be instructed to proceed with the completion of the lease, lay out the course, and draft the rules of the club"..... Lee-on-the-Solent is a parkland/heathland course bisected by two country roads. Not long by championship standards (5962 from the white tees, 5759 yellows and 5495 ladies) but difficult enough to provide a test for all levels with a Par of 69 and a Standard Scratch of 69. Contoured fairways may prove costly for the attacking line, well-placed hazards may trap the unwary while punishing rough may obscure the way to some of the best greens in Hampshire. Accuracy is more important than distance at Lee with plenty of woodland and gorse waiting to collect wayward shots. Memorable holes include the 8th, a dogleg left with a tight drive, sloping fairway and an undulating green and the 13th that requires a shot to clear the River Alver and hold the sloping green well-protected by its five bunkers. It is a particular peculiarity of the course that its five short holes frequently prove the most difficult and, when the wind blows (as it does quite often this close to the coast) a whole new strategy must be entertained for these and the remaining thirteen holes. Even on a good day you will feel you have played well if you manage the Par 3 s.....................
