CANTERBURY POTTERY is owned and run by Richard Chapman, who has been throwing pots all his life. The pottery was established by Richard's mother, Betty Chapman after she graduated from the Royal College of Art and started a family of three boys. As Betty worked from home, Richard learned about pottery at her knee and in 1964 CANTERBURY POTTERY was opened. Richard's pots are created to be used! Fired to 13000C his stoneware pots are suitable to use in the oven, microwave, dishwasher and are frost proof. Living in the idyllic Kentish countryside, Richard finds his inspiration for the flowing forms and colours of his pottery, in the surrounding fruit orchards, hop gardens and chalk downlands. Each piece is handmade and glazed, in some cases up to seven different glazes are applied, which together create Richard's unusual and distinctive style. The beautiful, historic city of Canterbury is also a huge source of inspiration in Richard's work; as are the roman and anglo-saxon archaeological artefacts on display in the city's museums. CANTERBURY POTTERY'S Showroom & Studio are situated in the city's Buttermarket, directly opposite the Cathedral's Christchurch Gate (the main entrance). In the Showroom it is usual to find Richard and his small team of ceramicists making and finishing pottery. Several of Richard's apprentices have gone on to be potters in their own right..........
